"Kansas Route 66 Main Street"
The Baxter Springs News, with the cooperation of the Kansas Historic Route 66 Association, has made plans to make "Kansas Route 66 Main Street" a quarterly publication beginning with the November 30th, 2006 inaugural edition. This edition, in honor of the the Historic Highway's 13.2 miles running through Kansas, wil begin the publication with the volume 13, number 2.
Once a quarter "Main Street" will feature stories about people, businesses, events, and history that are related to Route 66. Most of the stories will be researched and written by members of the Kansas Historic Route 66 Association or it's officers. Their hope is to promote the short stretch of highway that runs through Galena, Riverton, and Baxter Springs, and bring the communities together in an effort to preserve a major part of the area's history.
The publication will appear as a supplement to the Baxter Springs News, but there will also be copies made available to teh club for dispersal to other Route 66 organizations and enthusiast. With more and more of the highway disappearing over time, Kansas is the only state where the entire Old Highway
66 can still be driven. This unique feature of our stretch of road and the Kansas Historic Route 66 hopes to keep it.
Sponsors are needed to help pay for the printing of the publication. Advertising space is available for $100 per quarter, $400 per year.
